Newsom Diverts Billions From Law Enforcement

Democrat-led California is moving full speed ahead with plans to give billions in taxpayer-funded health benefits to illegal immigrants — while cutting back support for law enforcement. Governor Gavin Newsom’s newest budget shows where the state’s true priorities now lie.
According to a new report from the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), California will spend roughly $10 billion to provide full health benefits to illegal immigrants. By contrast, only $348 million has been allocated for law enforcement. That means California’s Democrat leaders are spending nearly thirty times more on illegal migrants than on their own police.
The report found that the cost of covering illegal immigrants is 35 percent higher than the $7.4 billion Newsom originally predicted in his January budget proposal.
California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, now covers an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrants. That group represents about 11 percent of the entire Medi-Cal population. The coverage includes doctor visits, prescription drugs, dental care, and even vision services.
Illegal immigrants’ benefits will consume roughly one-fourth of all state funds going into Medi-Cal.
Meanwhile, California police departments continue to face shortages, shrinking budgets, and increasing danger. With crime rising in major cities like Los Angeles and Oakland, local officers say they’re being ignored while the state spends on individuals who broke federal law to enter the country.
This pattern is not limited to California. According to reports, Oregon is also set to spend $500 million more on free health care for illegal immigrants than on its state police budget. Other blue states that rushed to expand health programs for non-citizens — including Illinois and Minnesota — are now walking back those promises after discovering that costs were spiraling out of control.
Democrats, however, have refused to adjust course in California. Newsom and his allies continue to argue that these programs are a form of “compassion,” even as taxpayers and law enforcement suffer.
The LAO report follows years of pressure from progressive groups, including those with ties to billionaire George Soros, demanding that states divert money away from policing. Those same activists have long pushed to “defund the police” and redirect funds toward social programs for migrants and so-called “equity” initiatives.
In Congress, California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna admitted just last month that the ongoing budget standoff in Washington centers on the left’s push to fund health care for illegal immigrants with taxpayer dollars.
“Democrats are seeking to give taxpayer-funded health care to illegals,” Khanna said, referencing the fight over the government shutdown.
Police officers in Democrat-run cities have expressed growing frustration at the lack of support from their state leaders. Departments are reporting burnout, recruitment struggles, and rising retirements — problems made worse by funding cuts.
Critics say that Democrats are effectively abandoning public safety to fund benefits for people who entered the country unlawfully.
California’s decision has reignited a nationwide debate over how far blue states will go to advance progressive immigration policies — even if it means gutting police budgets and risking public safety.
For many Californians, this latest move confirms what they’ve suspected for years: their leaders care more about political symbolism than the safety and security of their own citizens.
