In a move that has left the political chattering class in a tizzy, President Donald Trump has confirmed that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Yes, you heard that right. The man who once said he could negotiate peace in a day is now on the phone with Putin, presumably hashing out the details over a casual chat.

According to reports, Trump, aboard Air Force One, told reporters, ‘I’ve had it. Let’s just say I’ve had it… And I expect to have many more conversations. We have to get that war ended.’ Well, isn’t that reassuring? The President of the United States is having conversations. One can only hope they’re more substantive than his tweets. The Kremlin, ever the bastion of transparency, neither confirmed nor denied the conversation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, ‘I personally may not know something, be unaware of something.

Therefore, in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny it.’ In other words, the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, but that’s par for the course in international diplomacy, right? Trump has been vocal about his desire to end the war in Ukraine, a conflict that has dragged on for nearly three years. He has promised to bring a swift conclusion to the hostilities but has been coy about the specifics.

When pressed about his conversations with Putin, Trump declined to provide details, saying, ‘If we are talking, I don’t want to tell you about the conversations. I do believe we’re making progress. We want to stop the Ukraine-Russia war.’

So, we’re making progress, but the nature of that progress remains a mystery. It’s like being told you’re getting a surprise gift but not knowing if it’s a new car or a pair of socks.

The timing of these revelations is particularly interesting, coming just ahead of the Munich Security Conference, where Vice President J.D. Vance and other top officials are expected to discuss the ongoing conflict. One can’t help but wonder if this is a strategic move or just another example of the administration’s penchant for improvisation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for his part, has expressed a desire to meet with Trump before any potential meeting between Trump and Putin. Zelenskyy has been vocal about the need for Ukraine to be involved in any negotiations concerning its future. After all, it’s his country that’s been invaded, but why should that matter in the grand scheme of great power politics? The specifics of any potential deal remain as elusive as ever. Will there be territorial concessions? Security guarantees? A promise from Putin to stop shirtless horseback riding photo ops? The world waits with bated breath.

In the meantime, the war rages on, with countless lives hanging in the balance. But fear not, dear reader, for our President is on the case, making phone calls and having conversations. Let’s hope that this time, talk leads to meaningful action and not just another round of empty promises.

In the end, one must ask: Is this the ‘Art of the Deal’ at work, or just another episode of political theater? Only time will tell. Until then, we can take solace in the fact that our leaders are, at the very least, talking. Because, as we all know, nothing solves a complex international crisis quite like a good old-fashioned chat.
