Mexico City is seeing a wave of protests as locals rage against Americans moving in and driving up housing costs, calling it an “invasion” and accusing foreigners of pushing locals out of their neighborhoods.

What began as a peaceful march through the Condesa and Roma districts turned violent, with protesters smashing storefront windows, looting shops, and harassing foreigners. Graffiti sprayed on shattered windows read, “Get out of Mexico,” while others carried signs declaring, “Gringos, stop stealing our home.”

Protesters claim American “digital nomads” are jacking up rents and displacing native residents, echoing similar anti-tourism protests erupting in Europe. Since the 2020 COVID lockdowns, many Americans have moved to Mexico City to work remotely, taking advantage of lower rents while turning local neighborhoods into expensive hotspots.

But it’s not just the rent hikes angering locals. Protest signs accused foreigners of imposing their culture while exploiting cheaper living costs, with one declaring, “Your new home is an invasion.”

“Today we are fighting against gentrification,” one protester told the AP, blaming foreigners for displacing Mexicans and imposing their prices and culture on the city. Another protester, a climate activist, called the situation “just one more step towards colonization, dispossession and the exploitation of our resources.”

While Mexican activists claim this is a battle for cultural preservation, some Americans are pointing out the irony. Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk wrote, “So now Mexicans are protesting foreigners changing their culture and driving up housing costs? Welcome to what Americans have been with for decades.”

Another X user posted, “Apparently Mexicans are upset that non-Mexicans are coming to their nation & driving up the price of well, everything. Ironic!”

The protests in Mexico City mirror a wider backlash in cities like Barcelona, Lisbon, and Milan, where locals say foreigners are hollowing out their communities while pricing them out of their own homes.

This growing resentment abroad should serve as a wake-up call for America as millions pour across the southern border under Biden’s failed open borders policies. Americans have been told for years to accept the erasure of their communities and the skyrocketing costs of housing without complaint, but now other countries are pushing back when the same thing happens to them.

Conservatives should take note: even Mexico is learning what happens when unchecked migration and foreign influence overwhelm a nation’s culture and economic stability. America should not wait until it’s too late to protect its own communities from the same fate.
