A $450 Water Heater Bill to Ring in the New Year—Thanks, Biden

Just when you thought it was safe to enjoy your hot shower, the Biden administration decided to play Santa after Christmas. In a sneaky move that conveniently avoided public fanfare, the Department of Energy finalized climate rules targeting natural gas-powered water heaters. And no, they didn’t bother with a press release. Why ruin the surprise, right?

The regulations aim to cut carbon dioxide emissions (and your water heater just became enemy number one in the war on climate change). But here’s the kicker: they’ll effectively remove 40% of tankless water heater models from the market by 2029. So, what’s left? More expensive or less efficient alternatives—because nothing says climate-friendly like pricing everyday Americans out of basic necessities.

Industry experts predict the average cost of new water heaters will jump by $450. That’s a delightful little tax for low-income families and seniors who rely on affordable options. But hey, sacrifices must be made—by you, of course, not by the politicians who’ll keep their swanky appliances running.

The timing? Just as President-elect Donald Trump gears up to undo Biden’s climate crusade, this little regulatory gem sneaks through. Biden’s administration has been on a roll, targeting gas stoves, refrigerators, and now water heaters, all in the name of reducing carbon emissions. Heck, if Biden had another four years, your toaster could be in serious danger.

Critics aren’t holding back. Ben Lieberman of the Competitive Enterprise Institute called it out, saying, “It bans an entire category of tankless water heaters and the ones that are most affordable. This is all part of the climate change agenda – an antipathy towards natural gas because they want to electrify everything.” Translation: it’s less about saving the planet and more about controlling your choices.

Meanwhile, manufacturers like Rinnai America, who invested millions based on prior incentives, are crying foul. Their high-efficiency models—exactly the type you’d think the DOE would champion—are on the chopping block.

Legal battles loom, but for now, Biden’s made one thing clear: your gas-powered water heater’s days are numbered, and your wallet’s about to feel it.
